Colombian crash miracle

Map of the CaribbeanA passenger aircraft carrying 131 passengers and crew crashed and broke up on landing at the Colombian island of San Andres, injuring 114 people, yet only one person died – as the result of a heart attack. The Boeing 737, operated by local airline Aires, was reportedly hit by a lightening strike just before it crash-landed, and it was only through ‘the skill of the pilot [that] kept the plane from colliding with the airport’.
Donald Tascon, deputy director of Colombia’s aviation authority, told reporters: “We are inspecting the remains of the plane to try to establish what the damages were and what caused the accident. Of the 99 passengers who were taken to the Amor de Patria hospital on San Andres, only four suffered severe injuries, according to hospital director Dr Robert Sanchez.
